xplore+ sponsored Apps For Flanders

xplore+ sponsored the 2012 edition of the Apps For Flanders Open Data event. We believe in Open Data, both inside a company as well as outside.

According to Wikipedia: “Open data is the idea that certain data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control. While not identical, open data has a similar ethos to those of other “Open” movements such as open source, open content, and open access. The philosophy behind open data has been long established (for example in the Mertonian tradition of science), but the term “open data” itself is recent, gaining popularity with the rise of the Internet and World Wide Web and, especially, with the launch of open-data government initiatives such as Data.gov.”

Data, wherever it resides in your company, must be opened and made available for analysis, reporting, mining, etc. Unopened data is of no use and risks to be loss of insight and loss of money. Steer, plan and monitor, the more you know your companies data, the better action you can take, the more value you can create, the more competitive you will be.

Data should be open to as many users as possible and as allowed. A big variety of users assures different perspectives, different angles from which the data is looked at and maximizes the benefit of it. This implies next data “abilities” to be in place:

  •  Accessibility
  • Availability
  • Understandability
  • Visibility
  • Operability
